European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
